How to breathe when experiencing extreme stress, depression, or anxiety

 

An event for Indians in Århus limited to 25 participants

A cheerful talk about how to respond using a breathing tool when realizing we are in a situation of extreme stress, depression, or anxiety. The ideas and methods presented in the talk summarize this topic as laid out in the book I wrote, “What’s Breath Got to do With It.”

I will start by describing the preconditions needed for relaxation and then give examples of external sensory and internal thought-driven stressors.

In the main part of the talk, I will suggest five breathing actions that can help us shift back to relaxation when experiencing extreme stress.

  1. Reducing the breathing rate or adding short breath holds
  2. Bringing air to the bottom of the lungs
  3. Nose humming or hissing
  4. Force changing the breathing ratio
  5. Synchronizing smiles with the inhales and shifting to a neutral facial expression on the exhales.

The idea is to implement all five actions in a single breathing cycle that can be repeated.

It won’t just be theoretical stuff; prepare yourself for breathing exercises, demonstrations, and cheezy smiles.
